Join a panel of experts to discuss the future of South African elephants with Giant Steps author Richard Peirce

Giant StepsStruik Nature and Richard Peirce invite you to join a panel of experts as they share their insights about the future of South African elephants.

Peirce’s new book Giant Steps looks at the predicament of elephants today: possible extinction, the training of captive elephants and population management. He is a well-known shark conservation campaigner and was the chairman of the Shark Conservation Society and the Shark Trust. He is a writer, broadcaster, journalist, photographer and filmmaker and has authored several books, including The Poacher’s Moon – an exposé of rhino-poaching.

The event takes place at 5:30 for 6 PM on Thursday, 25 February at Cape Union Mart in Eastgate.

Panel of Experts:

  • Sean Hensman is the manager of Adventures with Elephants and has grown up with elephants since 1988. His family have saved in excess of 80 elephants from certain death, and these pachyderms have been used as ambassadors highlighting the conservation difficulties facing wildlife and conservationists in an ever changing Africa.
  • Isabel Wentzel is the Manager for the Wildlife Protection Unit at the National SPCA. With a National Diploma in Nature Conservation and completing the Environmental Enforcement course, she has been involved in the fields of captive wildlife, conservation, and animal welfare enforcement for the past 28 years, of which the last seven years as a Senior Inspector for the Wildlife Protection Unit working countrywide.
  • John Brooker is MD of the Glen Afric Group (Glen Afric Country Lodge, Glen Afric Films, Glen Afric Volunteer Experience & Glen Afric Safaris) and owner and director of the Brooker Wildlife Group. John pioneered the game capture industry in South Africa and has been involved in the capture and translocation of wildlife for the past 50 years.
  • Gerhard Steenkamp, BSc BVSc MSc, is a dental and maxillofacial veterinary surgeon. He was the past president of the South African Veterinary Association. In 2008 Gerhard completed his MSc cum laude on the clinically relevant morphometrics in African elephants. He also worked on Bully, one of the elephants featured in Giant Steps.
